About Sydney Football Stadium Redevelopment Project

The Sydney Football Stadium redevelopment project was undertaken to meet future safety and accessibility requirements, as well as boost visitor numbers to future events. The $828 million redevelopment took place between 2018 and 2022, incorporating 42,500 undercover seats and 1,289 toilets. The project used 40,000m3 of concrete and 32,804 bolts and the roof features solar panels and includes a water siphonic drainage and harvesting systems. Find out more here.

Pipe Infrastructure Capabilities

The installer, Axis Plumbing, used over 2,500m of Surepress Press-fit pipe ranging from 15mm - 168mm and hundreds of fittings to install part of the storm water drainage from the stadium roof. The system feeds water into the stadium’s bathroom facilities using a siphonic drainage method. Siphonic drainage uses a vacuum method to transfer the water, preventing air from entering the downpipes. This allows higher volumes of water to drain more quickly, which means fewer, smaller diameter downpipes are required.

Challenges and Solutions

As it is essential the siphonic roof drainage design is watertight, Surepress’ pressfit piping system is ideal due to its leak path detection o-ring, check sleeve QA cellophane seal and water flow efficiency. The system is aesthetically pleasing, an important aspect as it is mounted to the underside of the roof and is part of the ‘look-and-feel’ of the stadium. In addition, Surepress piping systems are easily modified on-site and are up to 10 times faster than conventional welding methods, thus reducing installation times and cutting costs by up to 30%.
